In honor of Earth Day 2013, we’d like to share with you some of the ways Puritan supports our environment and natural resources. It’s not just our biodegradable single-use medical products that set us apart as an environmental industry leader.
Our facility now runs on 100% renewable energy (via wood process waste) for all building heat, hot water and manufacturing. We use electricity generated from 10% renewable energy sources, and our wood waste products are purchased for recycling by wood pellet manufacturers. Plus, we recycle 100% of our paper, cardboard, glass and metal waste.
Additionally, having long been involved in the stewardship of the woodlands of Northern New England, we use sustainable Northern white birch in the manufacturing of many of our biodegradable single-use medical products.
Northern white birch is chosen for its light color, smooth surface, tight grain, and tensile strength; meaning we’re not sacrificing quality for sustainability. With Puritan products, you get both. We’ve streamlined our manufacturing process to maximize efficiency and minimize waste.
Did you know, for example, that a tongue depressor can be processed from tree to case in just three hours, or that 80,000 tongue depressors can be produced from just one tree?
Our Puritan tongue depressors, applicator sticks, and additional woodenware are stamped from sheets of birch veneer, tumbled together to produce a smooth clean finish. The uniformity and quality of this high grade and renewable woodenware helps us to be recognized as the leader in the manufacturing industry. Whatever the use, all of our biodegradable, disposable products perform the best in even the most demanding environments.
