Community support has always been a pillar of our mission at Puritan and Hardwood Companies; and Womancare is a local organization we feel particularly strongly about.
We’ve proudly supported the Womancare's Annual Race to End Domestic Abuse since its inception, more than a decade and a half ago, and are looking forward to continuing that tradition by participating in the 17th annual event this Sunday, October 6.
This year, we had the opportunity to talk with Race Director, Angie Alfonso about what Womancare does for the local community, and how Puritan and Hardwood have helped them to achieve their goals throughout the years:
1. What services does Womancare offer the local community?
Womancare is a community-based organization working to end domestic violence offering:
- 24 hour helpline
- Support Groups
- Legal Advocacy
- Temporary Emergency Shelter through a Safe Home System
- Transitional Housing
- Community and School-Based Education
- Harmony Camp
- Outreach Offices in Dexter, Milo and Greenville
- Volunteer Opportunities
2. How has the Annual Race to End Domestic Violence evolved over the last 17 years?
Over the last 17 years the “Race to End Domestic Abuse” has grown exponentially. In the beginning a handful of walkers and runners would participate raising almost $3,000. As more and more community members are impacted by domestic violence in our area, more individuals are compelled to take action to show support for victims, celebrate survivors and raise awareness that domestic violence will not be tolerated in our community. In recent years, we have had more than 250 participants and we have raised over $17,000!
3. How long has Puritan/Hardwood been a sponsor of Womancare's Annual Race to End Domestic Violence?
Puritan and Hardwood have been a sponsor of our race since the beginning, for over 17 years. Both companies have been an amazing supporter in a variety of ways, including allowing employees to seek services during the workday, adopting policies to support employees dealing with domestic violence, allowing us to use your facility for our phone-a-thon, supporting our Valentine Ball, and contributing to our annual race.
4. What does this money go toward? Does it vary from year to year?
The “Race to End Domestic Abuse” is our largest fundraiser, providing money for general operating costs and allowing us to provide core services to victims and families affected by domestic violence. By raising funds that are not restricted, it provides us with leverage to apply for state and federal funds, which are continually diminishing.
Don’t Forget to Support Womancare in This Year’s Event!
In addition to our annual donation, for several years Puritan and Hardwood employees have participated in either the 5K race or walk-a-thon and collected pledges among co-workers. Let’s keep the streak alive!
Look for our sponsor logo on the back of your race shirt. Our corporate donation helps support this program’s ongoing initiatives, and any additional pledges from our employees will help to serve the organization’s essential mission.
